Once you make pizza dough from scratch, store-bought will never feel the same. This recipe makes enough for two large pizzas and freezes well.
Prep: 15 min
Rise: 60-90 min
Total: ~90 min
Yield: 2 pizzas
Difficulty: Medium
Cuisine: Italian
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups bread flour (or all-purpose)
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water (110F)
- 2 tbsp olive oil, plus more for the bowl
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Stir until a shaggy dough forms, then turn out onto a floured surface and knead 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm spot for 60-90 minutes until doubled.
- Punch down the dough and divide in half. Shape each half into a ball.
- On a floured surface or parchment, stretch each ball into a 12-14 inch round. Add your toppings.
- Bake at 500F (or as hot as your oven goes) on a preheated pizza stone or inverted sheet pan for 10-12 minutes.
To freeze: After step 5, wrap each dough ball tightly in plastic wrap and freeze. Thaw overnight in the fridge when ready to use.
